How have we gotten to this place where making popcorn the "old fashioned" way is seen as so time-consuming? That the idea of taking a bag out of plastic wrap out of a box and microwaving it for 4 minutes, is so much easier than putting a little oil in a pot, pouring in some kernals and heating it up for, what, maybe 6 minutes? Is it the occasional shake of the pot that seems so overwhelming? Our brains have been hijacked by the food industry. Why do we need artificial flavorings when you can add some melted butter and a shake of salt?
Look folks, if you're eating popcorn as a healthy snack, you should really know what's in yours. So just make it yourself!
* POUR a thin layer of olive oil (or canola/rapeseed oil) in the bottom of a saucepan and swirl it around to coat.
*POUR a single layer of kernals into pot - any more and it will overflow.
*HEAT over a medium-high heat (too hot and your popcorn will burn before it's all popped.)
*COVER with a lid and shake pot gently for time to time.
*LISTEN for the Pop! When popping tapers off, turn off the heat and let pot sit until you don't hear anymore pops.
*POUR into a bowl and add your toppings - melted butter, salt, parmesan cheese, lemon/lime squeeze, cayenne pepper - get creative if you like! Stir and enjoy!
